A new policy signed by Superintendent Jeff Banta was released March 12 that aims to increase educational awareness of the potential problems and provide resources to schools, including the use of the Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Program, a federally funded law enforcement initiative to help identify and treat problems within the community. Other public and private organizations including The Chicago Teachers Union, United Teachers of Chicago and CPS and the American Civil Liberties Union have come out in support of legislation and policies targeting steroids, as well as efforts to change policy and practices with regard to bullying. CPS Superintendent Barbara Byrd-Bennett said the department is working with state, federal and local agencies to educate CPS students about the serious nature of steroid abuse for "reasons related to health and safety." "We understand that steroid abuse is a problem across the city, just as it is across the country," Byrd-Bennett said in a March 12 news release.
